Tomorrow morning we will finally depart on our long awaited adventure. The trailer is stuffed ... axles groaning, seams bursting but as long as we keep going downhill we should be OK. Following is a poem that I wrote for the book "In The Shadow of Babylon." It seems appropriate as we set out on yet another journey.
Bon Voyage!
The Trip
The road winds on beyond my view,
No hint of where the end might be.
I trod forward with a determined gait,
Will it end at fence, field, or sea?
It matters not to me a wit
What lies at the end of the road
For it's the journey that counts most,
Not where my pack is finally stowed.
Here's a hill that's mighty steep.
Forward... dig in my toes.
Confident that, beyond the grade
A downward trail flows.
Sometimes the view is black indeed
As clouds wrestle with the sun.
The winds buffet and push at me
And it seems my trip is done.
No! I scream, shoulders squared
The road ends not here!
I lean against the mighty force
Set aside my fear.
I crest the hill leaving behind
The blackened, noisy sky
And see my road, smooth and wide,
And hear its whispered cry.
Follow me, be stout and true,
There is nothing else to explore.
The road knows not where it ends,
The trip is all, there's nothing more!
I see you coming toward me.
We are all but passers by.
We parallel for a while
And then diverge, bye and bye.
There are so many roads,
Unexplored and new,
Each with it’s own charm
Which will you pursue?
No two roads are the same,
Each a challenge of its own,
Each a different course pursued
And each traveled all alone.
There is no need to rush
On toward some distant end.
It is a one-way trip,
Enjoy each unknown bend
So when the road narrows
To a foggy, single path,
You leave a road well traveled
With a happy wave and laugh.
Oh, what a grand adventure
Offers each and every road,
When cheerfully explored
With a light and happy load.
